You don’t need a babysitter, a fancy reservation, or a whole evening away from the kids to have a good date night.
When you have kids, finding time to reconnect with your partner can feel like one more thing on an already very long to-do list. Between finding a babysitter, coordinating schedules, getting everyone ready, and actually leaving the house, sometimes planning the date becomes more work than the date itself. But date night doesn’t have to mean hiring a babysitter and leaving the house.
Sometimes the best couples’ date nights are the simple ones: ordering your favorite takeout after bedtime, getting coffee together, or turning an ordinary evening at home into something that actually feels intentional.
If you’re looking for date night ideas without a babysitter, here are some easy ideas to try.
1. Have an At-Home Date Night After Bedtime
This might be the easiest date night for parents. Once the kids are in bed, resist the urge to immediately start cleaning, scrolling, or catching up on everything you didn’t finish during the day. Instead, make the evening about the two of you.
Order takeout, make your favorite meal, put on music, light a candle, and sit down together. You could even get dressed instead of staying in whatever you wore all day ( We do not do this, but it’s such a cute idea)!
2. Plan a Backyard Date Night
Set up a little outdoor space with string lights, music, snacks, and your favorite drinks. Have dinner outside or turn it into a backyard movie night.
You can even give your date night a theme:
- Italian dinner night
- Taco night
- Backyard movie night
- Dessert and coffee date
- Charcuterie and conversation night
The point isn’t to create a Pinterest-perfect evening. It’s to make your normal routine feel a little less routine.
3. Go on a Coffee Date With the Kids
Not every date has to be adults-only. Grab coffee together and bring the kids along. Find a coffee shop with outdoor seating, visit a local café, or take your drinks on a walk. It may not be as relaxing as a traditional date, but getting out of the house and having an actual conversation with your partner can be exactly what you need. And yes, the kids will probably interrupt your conversation 56 times but it is good to get out as a family, an for your kids seeing mom and dad spending time together.
It still counts.
4. Try a Family Date Night

If finding childcare isn’t an option, make it a family outing. We do this often, and usually bring aunts, uncles and grand parents along as well. We go bowling, try a new restaurant, visit an arcade, get ice cream, go to a local event, or explore somewhere we’ve never been together.
Sometimes date ideas for parents can include the whole family. You don’t have to wait for a perfectly child-free evening to make memories together.
5. Take a Late-Night Drive
Get the kids in their pajamas (right at bedtime), grab a coffee, dessert, or late-night snack and go for a drive. Make a playlist. Roll the windows down. Talk about something other than the kids, schedules, bills, and what’s happening tomorrow.
You don’t even need a destination. Sometimes having uninterrupted adult conversation in the car is the date.
6. Have a Living Room Movie Date
Turn your living room into a mini movie theater. Pick a movie you both want to watch, make snacks, turn off the lights, and put the phones away. It’s simple, inexpensive, and one of the easiest date night ideas for couples at home.
7. Have a Daytime Date
Who says date night has to happen at night? If your kids are in school, at an activity, or otherwise occupied during the day, use that window for some time together.
Go to lunch, grab coffee, go shopping, take a walk, or try a new restaurant.
Even a couple of hours together can make a difference when you’re intentional about using that time to reconnect.
8. Have a “No Phones” Date Night
Put both phones away for an hour. That’s it.
No scrolling. No checking emails. No answering random notifications.
Make dinner, play a card game, have a conversation, sit outside, or just hang out together. You might be surprised how much more connected you feel when neither of you is half-paying attention to a screen.
9. Have a Dessert Date After the Kids Go to Bed
Dinner doesn’t have to be involved at all.
Wait until the kids are asleep, then go grab ice cream, dessert, coffee, or whatever your favorite late-night treat happens to be. You could even make a rule that you have to try somewhere new each time.
It’s short, inexpensive, and still gives you a reason to spend some time together.
10. Make Date Night a Habit Instead of an Event
This might be the biggest thing.
If you’re always waiting for the perfect night, the perfect babysitter, the perfect budget, and enough free time, date night can become something you keep putting off.
Instead, make couples time a regular part of your routine.
Maybe it’s one night a week after bedtime, maybe it’s a monthly lunch date.
You Don’t Need a Babysitter to Date Your Spouse
Having kids changes your relationship, but it doesn’t mean your relationship has to disappear into parenthood (at least not forever).
You don’t always need a fancy restaurant, an expensive night out, or a babysitter every time you want to reconnect.
Sometimes date night is getting dressed up and going somewhere. Sometimes it’s sitting outside after bedtime with takeout.
Sometimes it’s a 45-minute coffee date with the kids in tow. And sometimes it’s just putting your phones down and remembering why you two chose each other in the first place.
The goal isn’t to have the perfect date night. It’s to keep making space for each other.
