How To Make Your Toddler’s Wooden Broom Set Match Your Home Aesthetic

When I saw this toddler wooden broom set up-cycle, I immediately saved it! I am all about the home aesthetic and I knew I had to give my daughter’s broom set a little make over. She has the Melissa and Doug wooden broom set, and although it doesn’t look awful, I knew it could be better. I decided to do a black color scheme to match my home decor.

I already had most of the items that I needed on hand, but here is what you will need..

What you will need:

Wooden Broom set

Spray paint

Painters tape

-Blow dryer

Hot glue gun

Chenille yarn

Black Ribbon

The only thing that I had to purchase was the ribbon. Challenge yourself to be creative and use what you have or can borrow. Also, consider purchasing a wooden broom set second-hand if you can find one (if not I have linked it for you).

How to do it:

First, I taped around the base of the mop and up the handle some with painters tape. It can be unscrewed instead of taping off, but I could not unscrew it. Next, I took a ziplock bag and tapped it around the strings. Then I spray painted the mop base with black spray paint.

Next, I wiped the base of rack clean, taped up the handle some and then spray painted it. For the top of the base, I taped off any part that I did not want black and then spray painted it.

I used black spray paint for the dust pan.

I was not exactly sure how to remove the yarn, so this is where Pinterest came in handy. To remove the yarn from the duster, I took a blow dryer got the duster hot so that the hot glue melted. Once the hot glue melts, the orange yarn will come right off. Once all the yarn is off, you will put hot glue on the stick and then glue the new yarn on the stick. I went in a back and fourth motion until I was satisfied with how fluffy it was. Make sure to press firmly on the entire thing so that the glue will stick.

For the hangers, I replaced the colorful string with black ribbon.

It was not a difficult project, just took some time getting it spray painted and letting it dry. In my opinion it was totally worth the effort.

Save this post for later and send this post to another mama who’d want to try!
