6 Tips on How to create a minimalist home

Creating a minimalist home has many benefits, having less clutter, reducing stress, less to clean, saving money and being more organized.

Simply put, minimalism is the act of living with less, despite being able to afford more. You are intentional about what you own.

Sometimes less is more, especially when it comes to your home. Less on your counters and walls, giving you more freedom and spending less time cleaning and organizing.

1. Get rid of stuff you no longer use

Everything you own should have a purpose. If it has been a year since you’ve used it, then you probably don’t need it and can get rid of it. There of course is an exception for holiday items.

Get rid of items by donating, selling, repurposing and throwing away items that you no longer use. Some items may include, clothes, jewelry, kids toys, kitchen appliances and utensils.

2. Stop buying extras

Buying extras of everything leads to cluttered cabinets and closets. Try budgeting and only purchasing food for the week.

If buying extras is necessary for your home make sure it is something that you can use in a certain amount of time.

3. Choose quality over quantity

If something is more durable, or timeless it is less likely you will have to go shopping for it. Initially it might cost more, but you will be able to use it for a longer period of time.

4. Purchase reusable items

Having reusable items is a great way to reduce waste as well as minimize the items in your home. For example, you could just have 8 cups, rather than 50 plastic cups. Same with plates, bowls and utensils.

5. Have a place for everything

Everything in your home should have a place. If it doesn’t, consider if you actually need it. Get rid of it if you don’t. If you don’t, get rid of it. If you do, find something else you know longer use to get rid of so that you have space.

6. Do one room at a time so you don’t become overwhelmed

Getting rid of your belongings can be overwhelming. To avoid being overwhelmed try taking one room, or space at a time.

Get your family involved and have them go through their things as well.

You will find the less you have, the more free you feel. It is not about getting rid of everything, but only keep things that matter to you.
